Pre-Purchase Car Inspection in Atlanta, GA

Georgia has never required an annual safety inspection. Emissions testing applies in thirteen metro counties and that is the whole of it — nothing checks the brakes, the steering or the structure of a used car before it changes hands here.

A wholesale town, and what that means for a private buyer

Metro Atlanta is one of the country’s big wholesale auction markets. Cars arrive from every state, move through the lanes in a morning and reappear on retail lots and in private listings within days. Most are exactly what they look like. Some are cars that were cheaper at auction for a reason nobody wrote down.

A car bought at auction and resold quickly has usually been valued, cleaned and photographed — not inspected. Announcements made in the lane do not travel with the car, and the person selling it to you may sincerely not know what was said about it.

It is also a commuter’s market. A car that has spent years on I-285 and GA-400 at rush hour has done its mileage in stop-start traffic, which is harder on brakes, transmission and cooling than the number suggests. Whether the car is on a lot in Gwinnett, in a driveway in Cobb or outside an office in Midtown, the inspector goes to it and the report reaches you minutes after they finish.

On this kind of purchase

  • ✓Structural repair and panel replacement — the thing a rebuilt title is meant to disclose and often does not
  • ✓Paint depth across every panel, which shows repair a listing photograph cannot
  • ✓Emissions readiness, because thirteen metro counties will not register a car that fails
  • ✓Fault codes read, including any cleared shortly before the car was listed
  • ✓Brakes and transmission for the stop-start wear of perimeter commuting

Every inspection also covers the full checklist — engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, tires, body and interior — with a road test where the seller permits one.

Worth knowing first

Does Georgia require a safety inspection?

No. Georgia has no annual safety inspection for private vehicles. An emissions test is required in thirteen metro Atlanta counties, but that measures the tailpipe, not whether the car is safe.

The car has a rebuilt title. Is that a deal-breaker?

Not automatically, but it changes what matters. A rebuilt car can be repaired properly or badly, and only the repair itself tells you which. That is what the inspection looks at.

Can you inspect at a dealership in Marietta or Duluth?

Yes, anywhere in the metro. The inspector goes to the car, and a dealer with nothing to hide has no reason to object.

Can you inspect a car that has just come out of an auction?

Once it is on a dealer lot or with a private seller, yes. Inside an auction, access depends on the auction’s own rules. More on auction cars.

What does it cost in Atlanta?

$249 for an everyday car, truck or SUV, and $499 for luxury, commercial and older vehicles. The price is the same anywhere in the metro, and nothing is paid until the report is ready.
