Pre-Purchase Car Inspection in Fayetteville, GA

Fayette and Clayton counties are inside metro Atlanta’s emissions area, so a used car bought here has to pass an emissions test before it can be registered. Most do. The ones that do not tend to fail for reasons a buyer cannot see on a test drive.

Will it pass the Georgia emissions test?

Georgia’s emissions test on modern cars reads the car’s own computer. If a fault code is stored, or if the readiness monitors have not finished their self-checks, the car can fail or be turned away, even if it drives perfectly.

Monitors reset when a battery is disconnected or codes are cleared, which is sometimes done just before a sale to make a warning light disappear. A car in that state needs days of normal driving before it is ready, and if the fault comes back, it fails.

The inspection reads the stored and pending codes and the readiness monitors, and notes signs that codes were cleared recently. You find out before you pay whether the car is likely to register without trouble.

On this kind of purchase

  • ✓Stored and pending fault codes
  • ✓Emissions readiness monitors, monitor by monitor
  • ✓Signs of a recent battery disconnect or code clearing
  • ✓Check-engine light function and engine behavior on the road test
  • ✓The rest of the car, from brakes to body, as on every inspection

Every inspection also covers the full checklist — engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, tires, body and interior — with a road test where the seller permits one.

Worth knowing first

Does Fayette County require an emissions test?

Yes. Fayette and Clayton counties are among the metro Atlanta counties where most cars need an annual emissions test to register. Georgia has no safety inspection.

The check-engine light is off. Is that enough?

Not always. A light can be off because codes were cleared just before the sale, and the car may still fail until its readiness monitors finish. The report shows where the car stands.

Do you cover Peachtree City and Riverdale?

Yes, and Tyrone, Jonesboro and the rest of the south metro. See Atlanta for the wider area.

Do I need to be there?

No. The inspector arranges the time with the seller, and the report reaches you minutes after they finish.

What does it cost?

$249 for an everyday car, truck or SUV, and $499 for luxury, commercial and older vehicles. Nothing is paid until the report is ready.
