Pre-Purchase Car Inspection in Billings, MT

Billings drivers get a full Montana winter, long highway miles and plenty of gravel. The trucks and SUVs that suit that life are the ones most people here buy, and they wear in ways that a dry spring test drive on paved streets will not reveal.

Four-wheel drive only matters if it works

Many four-wheel-drive systems are rarely used outside winter, and a transfer case or front axle that has sat disengaged for months can be the first thing to fail when you need it. The inspection checks that four-wheel drive engages and disengages properly, and listens for the noises that mean worn bearings or joints.

Gravel roads chip windshields, pit paint and batter the underside, from skid plates to oil pans. Winter adds block heater cords, batteries that have worked hard in the cold and the corrosion de-icing chemicals leave on brake lines and the frame. All of it is looked at and photographed.

Montana has no state safety inspection and no emissions test, so a private sale here is exactly as careful as the buyer makes it.

On this kind of purchase

  • ✓Four-wheel drive engagement, transfer case and front axle noises
  • ✓Underbody, skid plates and oil pan for gravel and off-road damage
  • ✓Windshield chips and cracks, and paint pitting
  • ✓Battery health, block heater and cold-start behavior
  • ✓Brake lines and frame for corrosion from winter de-icers

Every inspection also covers the full checklist — engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, tires, body and interior — with a road test where the seller permits one.

Worth knowing first

Does Montana require a vehicle inspection?

No. Montana has no annual safety inspection and no emissions test for private vehicles, so nobody checks a used car before it changes hands unless the buyer arranges it.

Can you check the four-wheel drive?

Yes. The inspector engages it where it is safe to do so, checks that it engages and releases, and listens for transfer case and axle noises.

Do you cover Laurel and Lockwood?

Yes, and the area around Billings. The inspector goes to wherever the car is.

Is a high-mileage truck worth inspecting?

Especially so. Montana miles are often long highway miles, which are kind to an engine, but the report shows how the truck was actually looked after.

What does it cost?

$249 for an everyday car, truck or SUV, and $499 for luxury, commercial and older vehicles. Nothing is paid until the report is ready.
