Pre-Purchase Car Inspection in Miami, FL

Miami-Dade has more used cars for sale, more choice and more history than almost anywhere in the country — and it has a reputation for paperwork that does not always describe the car it is attached to. That is not a reason to avoid buying here. It is a reason to look at the metal.

The paperwork is not the car

Odometer readings that disagree with the wear. Titles that were clean in one state and branded in another. A VIN plate that does not quite match the door sticker. None of these are common, but they are more common here than most places, and every one of them is caught by somebody standing at the car comparing what it says with what it is.

An inspection here reads the VIN from the car, the door jamb and the documents and checks they agree; reads the odometer against pedal, seat and steering-wheel wear; and reads the history report against what the underside and the panels actually show.

A lot of cars here also arrive from somewhere else. A car titled in another state has to go through Florida’s VIN verification before it can be titled here — a separate form the inspection does not replace — but because the inspector has already read the VIN in three places, a mismatch turns up before you have paid rather than at the tax collector’s office. And a car that has lived near the water has its own problem: salt air works on brake lines and subframes even if the car has never been flooded.

On this kind of purchase

  • ✓VIN read from the plate, the door sticker and the title, and checked to agree
  • ✓Odometer reading compared with pedal, seat, wheel and carpet wear
  • ✓Paint depth on every panel for repair the title does not mention
  • ✓Flood evidence — silt, tide lines, corroded underfloor connectors
  • ✓Salt-air corrosion on brake lines, subframes and electrical connectors

Every inspection also covers the full checklist — engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, tires, body and interior — with a road test where the seller permits one.

Worth knowing first

Can you tell if the mileage has been changed?

Often. The wear on the pedals, seat bolster, steering wheel and carpet tells its own story, and it is compared with the number on the dash and in the history.

I am buying from a seller who only speaks Spanish.

That is fine. The inspector deals with the seller directly to arrange access, and the report comes to you.

Do you cover Hialeah and Kendall?

Yes, and Miami Beach, Doral, Coral Gables and Homestead. Miami-Dade is one dispatch area.

Does Florida inspect used cars?

No. Florida has no safety or emissions inspection for private cars, so nothing checks a used car before it changes hands here unless the buyer arranges it.

The car has an out-of-state title. Does that matter?

Florida requires a VIN verification before titling a car from another state. That is a separate step; the inspection checks that the VIN on the car, the door sticker and the title agree, so any problem shows up first. See out-of-state purchases.

What does it cost in Miami?

$249 for an everyday car, truck or SUV, and $499 for luxury, commercial and older vehicles. The price is the same anywhere in the Miami-Dade area, and nothing is paid until the report is ready.
