Pre-Purchase Car Inspection in Houston, TX

Houston floods, and it floods cars in numbers. Harvey alone accounted for hundreds of thousands. Every storm since has added more, and the ones that were never claimed on were never branded — so they are dried out, detailed and sold on with a clean title and a good price.

The dangerous flood car is the one that was never claimed

A branded flood title is a warning you can act on. The problem is the car whose owner had no comprehensive cover, or chose not to claim: nothing was reported, so nothing appears on any report, and the car looks like an ordinary private sale at a slightly keen price.

What gives it away is physical and it is inside the car. Silt in the seat rails and the spare well. A tide line on the inner door card. Corrosion on bolt heads under carpet that should be bare metal. Electrical connectors under the floor going green. Somebody has to get in the car and look. More on how flood cars are found.

The metro is also simply big. A seller in Pasadena, League City or The Woodlands will still call it Houston, so we dispatch to where the car is rather than to a city limit: a dealer lot on the Gulf Freeway, a driveway in Katy, an office parking lot downtown. The report reaches you minutes after the inspector finishes, which matters when you are buying from Dallas, Austin or out of state and cannot see the car yourself.

On this kind of purchase

  • ✓Carpet lifted at the sills, spare well and seat rails for silt and water marks
  • ✓Underfloor wiring connectors and seat-belt anchor bolts for corrosion
  • ✓Every electrical function exercised, because water faults appear one circuit at a time
  • ✓Air conditioning and heater core, which trap and hold flood smell and debris
  • ✓Paint depth on every panel, because hail and collision repair both hide under a good detail

Every inspection also covers the full checklist — engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, tires, body and interior — with a road test where the seller permits one.

Worth knowing first

Will a history report tell me the car was flooded?

Only if an insurer claimed and the title was branded. A great many Houston flood cars were never claimed on, and for those the report is silent.

How can you tell months or years later?

Silt and corrosion stay where water leaves them — under carpet, in seat rails, on connectors beneath the floor. Those places are checked and photographed on every inspection.

Do you cover Katy and Sugar Land?

Yes, across the metro. The inspector goes to the vehicle.

Is a Houston car still emissions-tested?

Yes. Harris County and several counties around it are emissions counties, so the car needs an emissions test to register. The state safety inspection ended in January 2025, so nothing else is checked before a sale. More on what changed in Texas.

I am buying a Houston car from out of town.

That is common here, and it is where an inspection earns its keep. The inspector meets the seller, you do not need to be there, and the photographed report reaches you before you pay or arrange shipping. See buying from another state.

What does it cost in Houston?

$249 for an everyday car, truck or SUV, and $499 for luxury, commercial and older vehicles. The price is the same anywhere in the Houston area, and nothing is paid until the report is ready.
