Pre-Purchase Car Inspection in Cypress, TX

Cypress is family-car country. The driveways along US-290 and the Grand Parkway are full of three-row SUVs and full-size pickups, and when those come up for sale they have usually carried a family, pulled a boat or a camper, and sat in a great deal of Houston traffic on the way.

A family SUV and a towing truck wear out in different places

A three-row SUV that has done school runs and weekend sports lives a hard life inside: third-row seats and their folding mechanisms, rear climate control, power tailgates and sliding doors, and a lot of short trips that never let the engine and transmission fully warm up. None of that shows on the odometer, and most of it is expensive to put right.

A pickup that has towed is a different case. The hitch, the rear axle, the transmission fluid and the brakes tell you how hard it has worked, and a truck that has pulled a trailer every weekend can be worth a good deal less than the same truck that has not. The report says which one you are looking at. More on used truck inspections.

And Cypress sits on Cypress Creek, which flooded homes and cars across northwest Harris County in 2016 and again during Harvey in 2017. A car that was in that water and never claimed on will not show it on a history report, so the inspector lifts the carpet and looks. See how flood cars are found.

On this kind of purchase

  • ✓Third-row seats, sliding doors, power tailgates and rear climate control, each operated
  • ✓Hitch, wiring, rear axle, transmission fluid and brakes for signs of regular towing
  • ✓Carpet, seat rails and underfloor connectors for silt and water marks
  • ✓Cold-start engine and transmission behavior, which short family trips are hardest on
  • ✓Tire age and tread on heavy vehicles, where replacements cost the most

Every inspection also covers the full checklist — engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, tires, body and interior — with a road test where the seller permits one.

Worth knowing first

Do you inspect at the dealerships along US-290?

Yes. Most inspections here are on a dealer lot, and the inspector arranges the time with the dealership directly. A dealer’s own check is done to prepare the car for sale; ours is done for you. More on dealership inspections.

Can you tell if a truck has towed?

Usually. Wear on the hitch and trailer wiring, the rear axle and suspension, transmission fluid condition and brake wear all point the same way, and the inspector photographs what they find.

The seller lives in a subdivision off the Grand Parkway. Is that a problem?

No. The inspector goes to the car, whether that is a driveway, a garage or an office parking lot, and arranges the visit with the seller. You do not need to be there.

Is Cypress in an emissions county?

Yes. Harris County is an emissions county, so the car needs an emissions test to register. The Texas safety inspection ended in January 2025, so nothing checks the brakes or steering before a sale.

What does it cost in Cypress?

$249 for an everyday car, truck or SUV, and $499 for luxury, commercial and older vehicles. The price is the same anywhere in the Houston area, and nothing is paid until the report is ready.
