Car Inspection in Travis County, TX
Travis County is where most of the metro’s private car sales happen, and since the start of 2025 not one of them has to pass a safety check first. Texas abolished the annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles that January. Registration now costs a $7.50 replacement fee instead, and nobody looks at the brakes.
Booking starts with the ZIP the vehicle is in, so you know whether we can cover Travis County before you fill in anything else.
Nothing checks a used car in Texas any more
Until 2025 a Texas car had to pass a state safety inspection every year to be registered: brakes, steering, lights, tires, seat belts. House Bill 3297 abolished that for private vehicles. Travis and Williamson are emissions counties, so an emissions test is still required here — but an emissions test measures what comes out of the tailpipe, not whether the car will stop.
The practical effect is that a car sold privately in Austin today may not have had a single component inspected by anyone in years. The seller is not hiding anything; nobody ever told them. A pre-purchase inspection is now the only inspection that happens.
On this kind of purchase
- ✓Brakes, steering and suspension — the items the abolished state inspection used to cover
- ✓Tire age and tread depth, including the spare, which nothing now checks
- ✓Every exterior light and both seat belts front and rear
- ✓Emissions readiness, so a Travis County registration does not fail after you buy
Every inspection also covers the full checklist — engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, tires, body and interior — with a road test where the seller permits one.
Not every town has the same depth of cover. Enter the ZIP and we will tell you honestly what we can promise for that address.
Worth knowing first
Does Texas still require a safety inspection?
No. Since 1 January 2025, non-commercial vehicles no longer need one to register, under House Bill 3297. A $7.50 inspection program replacement fee is collected at registration instead. Emissions testing still applies in Travis and Williamson counties.
So what does that mean when I buy a used car here?
That the car in front of you may not have been looked at by anyone since it was last serviced — and there is no state paperwork to tell you either way. It is the main reason a private buyer in Austin should have one done.
Do you come to the seller, or do I bring the car?
We come to the car, anywhere in Travis County, at a dealership or a private address. You do not need to be there.
