Pre-Purchase Car Inspection in Dundalk, MD

In Dundalk a lot of used cars are sold at the curb: a sign in the window, a street of rowhouses, and a seller who wants it gone by the weekend. Many are advertised the way Maryland private sales often are — “as is, not inspected”.

“Not inspected” means the repair bill comes with the car

Maryland will not register a used car in your name until it has passed the state safety inspection. When a car is sold without that certificate, whatever it needs to pass becomes your problem — and until somebody looks, you do not know whether that means a pair of wiper blades or a set of brake lines.

An inspection before you buy answers that in advance. The report shows what is likely to fail and what else is worn, with photographs, so you can walk away or agree a price that already allows for the repairs.

This close to the water, cars also corrode faster. Winter road salt and damp salt air work on brake lines, subframes and rocker panels, so the underside gets particular attention. See also Baltimore County inspections.

On this kind of purchase

  • ✓Items likely to fail the Maryland safety inspection, listed so you can price them
  • ✓Brake lines, fuel lines and subframe for corrosion
  • ✓Rocker panels and wheel arches, where salt and water collect
  • ✓Tires, lights, wipers and exhaust — cheap faults that still stop a car from passing

Every inspection also covers the full checklist — engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, tires, body and interior — with a road test where the seller permits one.

Worth knowing first

The ad says “as is, not inspected”. What does that mean?

That the seller has not had the Maryland safety inspection done and will not pay for anything needed to pass it. You need a passing certificate to register the car, so it pays to know what it needs before you agree a price.

Are you a Maryland inspection station?

No, and our report is not a state certificate. It tells you the condition of the whole car, including what would probably need fixing to pass, so the state inspection holds fewer surprises.

Can you meet the seller on the street?

Yes. Plenty of inspections happen at the curb. The inspector needs room to walk around the car and look underneath, and arranges the time with the seller.

What does it cost?

$249 for most cars, trucks and SUVs, and $499 for luxury, commercial and older vehicles. On a “not inspected” car that can be a small price next to what the car turns out to need.
