Pre-Purchase Car Inspection in Mineral Wells, TX

Out past Weatherford, the vehicle most people are shopping for is a pickup, and often a diesel. Diesel trucks are built to last, and they are also expensive to fix, so the gap between a well-kept one and a tired one can be the price of the truck itself.

A diesel truck is only cheap if it was looked after

The costly parts of a modern diesel are well known: injectors, turbochargers, the fuel system and the exhaust aftertreatment that keeps it clean. The inspection listens to the engine cold and warm, watches for smoke and blow-by, and reads the codes the truck has stored.

Some diesels for sale have had their emissions equipment removed or disabled, a "delete". It can sound like a performance upgrade, but removing emissions equipment from a road vehicle is against federal law, and putting it back can cost thousands. The inspector notes whether the system appears to be in place.

Emissions testing depends on the county: Parker County, which takes in Millsap and Cool, requires a test at registration, while Palo Pinto County does not. Texas no longer has a safety inspection for private vehicles in either.

On this kind of purchase

  • ✓Cold start, idle and smoke on a diesel engine
  • ✓Exhaust aftertreatment present and fault codes read
  • ✓Turbo, injector and fuel-system warning signs on the road test
  • ✓Hitch, trailer wiring and rear suspension on a work truck
  • ✓Four-wheel drive engagement where fitted

Every inspection also covers the full checklist — engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, tires, body and interior — with a road test where the seller permits one.

Worth knowing first

Should I book Standard or Specialist for a diesel truck?

Standard covers an everyday pickup. Heavy-duty and commercial diesels are better served by the Specialist inspection, $499, which gives the inspector more time on the engine and drivetrain.

What is a "deleted" diesel?

One with its emissions equipment removed or disabled. Tampering with emissions equipment on a road vehicle is against federal law, and restoring it can be expensive, so the report notes whether the system appears to be in place.

Does Mineral Wells need an emissions test?

It depends on the county where the vehicle is registered: Parker County requires one, Palo Pinto County does not.

Do you cover Millsap, Cool and Weatherford?

Yes. See Dallas–Fort Worth for the wider area.

What does it cost?

$249 for an everyday car, truck or SUV, and $499 for luxury, commercial and older vehicles. Nothing is paid until the report is ready.
